Welcome to English at St John’s. We believe that a high quality English curriculum equips children with the skills needed to become confident readers, writers and speakers.
Reading
At St John’s, reading is at the centre of our English curriculum. We recognise the vital role that reading plays in all learning. We take a systematic synthetic approach to teaching phonics. This is delivered using the scheme – ELS (see phonics section). Following excellent teaching of phonics and early reading, whole-class reads and novels immerse our children in a wide variety of texts.
Writing
Writing forms a crucial part of our curriculum. Throughout school, opportunities are carefully planned to allow children to develop and apply their writing skills.
To deliver our English curriculum, we have chosen to use LPDS Talk for Writing.
English Curriculum Intent
At St John’s we believe that a high-quality English curriculum equips children with the skills needed to become confident writers who feel inspired to write creatively, coherently and with purpose. We strive to provide high quality, engaging lessons that encourage children to develop a lifelong appreciation for literature and language. We aim to provide the stepping-stones in grammar that build progressively, so that the children we teach can develop their voice as a writer, and with an awareness of the reader. We value the importance of high-quality speaking and listening. Our curriculum provides a wealth of opportunities for children at our school to grow in confidence in speaking to a range of audiences, developing the skills to listen to others and to communicate well.
At St John’s RC Primary School, the English curriculum aims to develop confident, enthusiastic readers, writers, and speakers. We want every child to develop a lifelong love of reading and language, recognising its importance in all areas of learning and everyday life.
We aim to ensure that all children:
- Become fluent readers who can understand and enjoy what they read
- Develop clear and accurate writing skills for different purposes and audiences
- Build strong speaking and listening skills, enabling them to express ideas confidently
Implementation:
We are following the Lancashire Talk programme across all year groups at St John the Baptist RC Primary School. This programme has focus on teaching English within carefully sequenced units of work including:
– vocabulary
– spoken language
– role play and drama
– reading – modelled and independent response outcomes
– writing – modelled and independent outcomes
