Welcome to Design Technology at St John’s.
At St John’s, we deliver a high-quality Design and Technology curriculum through the CUSP scheme. This scheme is fully aligned with the National Curriculum for Design and Technology and provides clear progression in knowledge, skills and understanding. Our aim is to develop creative, practical and reflective learners who can design, make and evaluate purposeful products while understanding how design and technology shapes the world around them.
Through the CUSP curriculum, pupils build a secure foundation of technical knowledge and vocabulary. They learn about structures, mechanisms, textiles, food and nutrition, and electrical systems, while developing key skills such as designing, making, evaluating and improving their work. Pupils are encouraged to think critically, solve real problems and work both independently and collaboratively.
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that knowledge and skills are revisited and built upon over time. Pupils learn about significant designers, engineers and innovations that have influenced modern life, helping them to appreciate the impact of design and technology locally, nationally and globally. Food and nutrition education also promotes an understanding of healthy eating and the importance of making informed choices.
At St John’s, we aim to inspire pupils to be curious, resilient and confident designers who take pride in their ideas and creations. By the end of primary school, pupils will have developed the practical skills, knowledge and creativity needed to participate in an increasingly technological world and to approach challenges with imagination and perseverance.
