Welcome to Geography at St John’s.
Geography Curriculum Intent
At St John’s, we deliver a high-quality geography curriculum through our own carefully designed scheme of work, which is fully aligned with the National Curriculum. Our curriculum provides clear progression in geographical knowledge, skills and understanding, enabling pupils to develop a strong sense of place and an awareness of the wider world. Our aim is to inspire curiosity about the Earth and its people while helping pupils understand how physical and human processes shape the environments in which we live.
Through our geography curriculum, pupils develop key knowledge of places, environments and geographical processes. They learn about local, national and global locations, building their understanding of physical features such as rivers, mountains and climate, alongside human features such as settlements, trade and land use. Pupils also develop important geographical skills including map reading, interpreting data, using geographical vocabulary and asking thoughtful questions about the world around them.
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that knowledge and skills are revisited and built upon over time, allowing pupils to make meaningful connections between topics. We aim to develop pupils’ understanding of environmental responsibility and sustainability, helping them recognise the impact humans have on the planet and the importance of caring for our world.
Fieldwork is an important part of our geography curriculum at St John’s. Pupils are given regular opportunities to explore their local area and beyond, enabling them to apply their classroom learning in real-world contexts. Through fieldwork, pupils develop practical investigative skills such as observation, data collection and analysis, deepening their understanding of geographical concepts.
By the end of primary school, pupils will have developed the knowledge, skills and confidence to think like young geographers. They will understand their place in the world, appreciate the diversity of environments and cultures, and be equipped with the curiosity and critical thinking needed to explore the world further.
