Lent and St Joseph’s Penny Boxes

Lent is the six-week period leading up to Easter. It is one of the most important times of the year for many Christians around the world. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (Wednesday 26th Feb) and finishes on Thursday 9th April – 3 days before Easter Sunday.

With Lent in mind, today your child will bring home a St Joseph’s Penny Donation Box. This is one of Caritas’ Diocese of Salford’s special charities that began in 1904.

The idea was that children within the diocese would raise money for other children faced with poverty, inequality and injustice. Any donations will be gratefully received.

Please can all boxes be returned by Friday 10th April.

Year of the Word

This week in the run up to Lent we have focused on kindness and why it is important to look for the goodness in people and to show forgiveness. We also looked at why Jesus tells us to “go the extra mile” and why we should “love our enemies”.

On Ash Wednesday we presented ourselves to have ashes placed on our foreheads as a sign of repentance – as Lent is a time for change and to become more like Christ in every aspect of ourselves. Please ask your child about what they have learned.
