Welcome to PE at St John’s.
Being active is a fundamental part of life at St John’s. We recognise that PE promotes a positive attitude towards physical activity and well-being. Our PE curriculum forms one aspect of this and we use the Lancashire Scheme of Work to deliver this. Pupils are encouraged to acquire the skills needed to participate with confidence and enjoyment in a variety of sports. All pupils take part in 2 hours of high quality PE and sporting activities each week.
Physical Education Curriculum Intent
At St. John’s we deliver a high-quality physical education curriculum which inspires all pupils to thrive in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. We use the Lancashire P.E. Scheme of Work to provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. We offer opportunities for pupils to compete in sport, build character and learn values such as fairness and respect.
EYFS and Key Stage 1
Pupils develop fundamental movement skills and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They learn how to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations. Pupils are taught to:

- develop balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities
- participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending perform dances using simple movement patterns
Key Stage 2
Pupils are taught to develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success. They learn how to:
- use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
- play competitive games, modified where appropriate [e.g. basketball, cricket, football, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
- develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]

Swimming and water safety
